This session was organized with the efforts of Prof Sujeet Kumar Sharma (Management Information Systems Area, IIM Trichy). This very insightful session on "Digital Innovation" was centered around "How Digital Creates Innovative Business Strategies? In order to design effective digital strategy, Prof Kohli stressed upon focusing on two fundamental questions:
- What is 'digital'?
- How does Digital create competitive advantage?
Prof Kohli cited McKinsey report and emphasized to consider Digital not as a ‘thing’, but as ‘a way of doing things’. It means Digital is about using software, platforms and data to create value in: (1) Foundational capabilities, (2) Core business, and (3) Exploring new frontiers. To this end, Prof Kohli also stressed upon relying on business strategy to identify "what" can be digitized. In this regard, he drew upon Tiwana’s framework of "Digitization Cube", to explicate the three frontiers of business that can be digitized: (1) Offering, (2) How it is delivered and (3) How it is purchased.
Moreover, in order to emphasize on how digital can create competitive advantage, Prof Kohli proposed to look at this question from the perspective of "Resource-Based View (RBV)" that would treat Digital Infrastructure and Analytics as the resources from which you generate capabilities that create customer value. He concluded with a systematic approach to identify areas of digital innovation and related research opportunities.
