Ph.D – An introduction

The Doctoral Programme in Management is a full-time doctoral programme that offers students opportunities for research in different areas of Management. Ph.D scholars are engaged in serious cutting edge research across areas of Business Law, Economics & Public Policy, Finance & Accounting, Information Systems & Analytics, Marketing, Operations Management & Decision Sciences, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management and Strategy.

The program begins with doctoral level courses from the very first day indicating its resolute focus on research training.

Eligibility Criteria

We are looking for students who are focused upon taking up academic and research positions across the globe after completing their doctoral studies. To this end, we seek individuals with strong academic credentials coupled with relevant orientation / work experience which they can leverage to carry out cutting edge research in the field of management. Application and Selection Process

  • Candidates are required to fill up the application form available online.
  • Each area evaluates its candidate and makes available its shortlist for the selection process which is held at the IIMT campus at Tiruchirappalli.
  • Those who clear the area round are then interviewed by the Doctoral Programme Committee for a final decision on their candidature.

Rigorous coursework focused on research training

The program is designed to help students complete their dissertation within a period of five years. In the first eighteen months, students are required to complete a coursework which exposes them to general management subjects, fundamental courses to gain an appreciation of management research, advanced courses in their respective areas of specialization and courses in research methodologies. In total a student has to earn a minimum of 54 credits.

The curriculum has undergone a careful modulation recently which has further increased its emphasis on research training. Students begin with doctoral level courses from the first term itself, and are required to opt for only a few select PGPM level courses for the requisite exposure to general management inputs.

Dissertation Advisory Committee

Upon successfully completing the coursework, students are required to form their respective 3 – 4-member Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC). The DAC comprises internal faculty members, with provision to include external faculty members and practitioners, if required. Students are assured to form a competent DAC given the wide pool of accomplished researchers who build up the full-time faculty base of the institute.

Thesis work

With guidance from their respective DACs, students prepare and defend their research proposal, and then work on their dissertation. The program culminates with students defending their dissertation work after having secured requisite journal publications that will help them embark on their respective academic / research careers.

Financial Support

Students receive handsome financial support during the program in order to help them meet their personal expenses, regular research related expenses, their requirements of hardware and software to facilitate research work and expenses related to various forms of travel like field-work, conferences, trainings and workshops.
